The prompts I use to get the best candid photos 🤍

1. Twirling — Give them something simple to do together and let the movement create the moment.

2. Jumping — Whether it’s jumping over waves or just jumping around together, movement almost always brings out genuine smiles.

3. Spinning each other around — One of my favorites for capturing those uncontrollable giggles.

4. Skipping — Instead of asking kids to “smile,” I’ll have them skip, run, or walk together. It keeps them engaged and gives me those natural in-between moments.

5. Playing tag — Letting kids actually play gives me the opportunity to capture their personalities instead of forcing a pose.

6. Playing in the sand — Building sandcastles, digging, collecting shells, or simply getting their hands messy creates some of the sweetest candid moments.

7. Playing in the water — Running through the waves, splashing, or holding hands while walking along the shoreline adds movement and keeps the session fun.

8. Letting them be themselves — This is the most important one. I’m not looking for perfectly posed smiles the entire session. I want the laughter, the movement, the little moments in between.

As a photographer, one thing I always tell moms is this: get in the frame. I know it’s easy to stay behind the camera, fixing little details and making sure everyone else looks perfect. But your children don’t see the things you worry about—they see their mom.

Some of my favorite photos now are the ones with my own mom. Growing up, she was almost always the one taking the pictures, not being in them. Looking back, I wish there were more photos of us together. Those images have become some of my most cherished memories because they remind me exactly how it felt to be loved by her.
